Part of the name (El Pinatar) comes from a large pine forest that used to be used for hunting. Later, in the 17th century, the other part of the name (San Pedro) was added after the fishermen built a chapel where they paid tribute to the apostle Peter. Today, the municipality is known for the large nature reserve Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro. Here you will find salt lakes, a walking area with opportunities to spot many species of birds and the famous medicinal mud baths. The municipality also has two marinas. Marina de las Salinas is located on the Mediterranean Sea and has berths for boats up to 30m. Club Náutico lo Pagan is located on the Mar Menor and offers boats up to 16m mooring.
