In 1963, Swede Nils Gäbel arrived with his wife and four children in the sunny harbor of Torrevieja, a small fishing village on the Costa Blanca. What began as an adventure with their sailboat blossomed into a lifelong love affair with the Spanish way of life.

A new life under the Spanish sun

The mild climate, the azure sea and the relaxed lifestyle immediately attracted the family, and they decided to settle permanently in Torrevieja.

For many of his compatriots, following Nils meant a big step: long journeys by boat or plane, language barriers, unfamiliar terrain, and building a life in a completely different culture. Yet, they were inspired by his courage and vision, and many decided to follow him, determined to overcome the challenges and become part of this new community.

In doing so, he laid the foundation for the first Swedish community in the La Mata area. Thanks to his efforts, more and more Europeans discovered Torrevieja's charm, not only as a holiday destination but also as a place to live, invest, and enjoy a new lifestyle under the Spanish sun.

His achievements were impressive. He initiated the construction of the first homes for expats, helped establish local services and networks, and played a crucial role in attracting investment from Scandinavia. Moreover, he fostered a rich cultural exchange: Scandinavian traditions blended with Spanish hospitality, creating a unique community still visible today in festivals, schools, and local associations.

His pioneering spirit gradually transformed Torrevieja from a quiet fishing village into a vibrant, international city known for its lively expat community, real estate opportunities, and luxurious lifestyle. In recognition of his contributions, a monument now stands at Torre del Moro, a symbol of his vision and lasting impact.
