The city:
Orihuela is a city where the Bishop's seat of the Province of Alicante was established for four centuries. This city has a very rich history and there are various museums and churches to visit. In addition, Orihuela also has a beautiful palm garden and a wonderful location in the valley, surrounded by the Sierra de Orihuela. Although the beaches of Orihuela Costa are some distance away, they do belong to the municipality of Orihuela. There are beautiful bays with many facilities where there are many tourists in the summer.
Location :
Orihuela is located about fifty kilometers south of Alicante and about twenty kilometers from the coast. It has an estimated 80,000 inhabitants and an enormous area of 365 km2. In 1969, the government declared Orihuela a historically cultural city of great significance. The river Segura flows through the city and divides it into the historic center and the new commercial center. Especially in recent years, many buildings and monuments have been restored and exhibitions are regularly organized here.
History:
The history of Orihuela goes back to the early Middle Ages. In the ninth century the city lost its independence to the Caliphates of Omeyas. In 1242 the city was recaptured by the Christians. From 1564 the Bishop's seat was established in this city and became a center for literature, science and art. The construction of the Cathedral began at the end of the thirteenth century. Worth seeing here is the 18th century organ. The Bishop's Palace is impressive due to its austere character and is the largest palace in the city.
